How do I use the Lulla Doll?

The doll can be placed with or near the child to give a feeling of closeness and comfort and to help the child fall asleep as well as stay asleep. Keep the doll close to your skin before giving it to the child. That way the doll can absorb your scent to give the child an added feeling of comfort and safety.
For children under 12 months it is recommended to keep the crib bare and rid of soft bedding, including crib bumpers, blankets, pillows and soft toys. The Lulla doll can be attached to the outside of the crib for children under 12 months and the attachment straps are located in the pocket on her back. The real life sounds alone can help children feel stable and safe, adding to the quality of sleep and well-being.
To turn on the sound press the heart shaped speaker button on the sound-unit for 3 seconds. The sound turns off automatically in 12 hours but you can turn it off sooner by pressing the heart shaped button for three seconds again. The 12 hour timer resets every time you push it off/on.
Adjust the volume by pressing the button on the left side of the sound unit. It has three volumes and the highest is a safe 65 dB making it safe for prolonged use for children’s sensitive hearing. When the sound is turned on it always starts on the lowest volume.
You can also turn on the sound and adjust the volume once you placed the sound unit inside the doll. We recommend placing the sound unit forward facing inside the doll and then you can press on the heart of the doll to turn her on/off and under her left arm to adjust the volume.
The sound unit uses two AA batteries. You can use both alkaline and rechargeables. Do not use Lithium batteries. Please note that rechargeable batteries can be bigger in size and some brand types might not fit the sound unit. Good quality brands that do fit the Lulla doll sound unit are for example Energizer rechargeable batteries.

How is the Lulla Doll different from other sleep companions?

Both the purpose and the design of the Lulla Doll differs from other seemingly similar products. The purpose of most other sleep related toys is to help babies fall asleep with the help of white noise, sometimes resembling womb sounds.
The Lulla Doll, on the other hand, is designed to help babies stay asleep for longer periods at a time, and to help babies stabilize and feel safe. It is imitating closeness to another person, more than trying to replicate the womb experience. The doll aims to do this with it's unique real life sounds that play for 8 hours. Other products only stay on for 15-45 minutes (or are movement activated), the sound file is not as large and the sounds are often not real-life.
Many sleep-toys are sound or motion activated with the purpose of helping babies fall back asleep if they wake up during the night.
We want to help babies not to wake up as frequently and also to help them keep their heartbeat and breathing more stable during sleep. This is achieved by having the sound on continuously.
Babies and children wake up and seek the same sleep cue they went to sleep with. It is one of the things which makes the Lulla Doll so different. White noise that is activated once the baby wakes and cries is too late. By then your little one has fully woken and it's difficult to settle them again. Lulla helps them when they are in the semi responsive state and gives them the confidence to self settle themselves when they hear the reassuring heartbeat and breathing, just like they would do when they co-sleep on you or with you.

Is the Lulla Doll safe for newborns and premature babies?

The Lulla doll is thoroughly safety tested to be suitable for newborns. However, it is not recommended to have loose items in a crib with a sleeping newborn from birth to 12 months. Because of this the doll is also designed to be a crib-attachment with velcro straps hidden in a pocket on its back for easy attachment to most cribs, car seats, strollers and other carriers.
The volume of the sound is 65dB making it safe for babies sensitive hearing.
The Lulla doll was especially designed to help premature children and children with serious illnesses. These children often have to spend extended time in isolation or separation from their parents and are in even greater need for comfort and stability. The Lulla Doll is a tremendous source of comfort during these difficult times.

For added safety for the most sensitive child, the Lulla doll can be washed at 60 degrees celsius to eliminate most bacteria. Please keep in mind that repeated washing at high temperature might affect the dolls appearance.

Will Lulla work for my older child?

Additionally, many people are using the doll with good success for their older children who are faced with troubles sleeping, calming down or falling asleep by themselves. Just like newborns, older children can also face a lot of sleep related challenges. Switching to a bigger bed, sleeping in their own room, sleeping outside of the home overnight, and going to daycare may all affect a childs' sleep. In these cases the Lulla Doll can help to make them feel calmer and safer.

We've even heard of a few parents that like to use the sound to help them fall asleep and we had reports of the doll helping dads to stop snoring! Elderly people with Alzheimer have also used the doll for added comfort.

How long do the batteries last?

The sound box uses 2 x AA batteries, which is not the same as the original doll.
The overall run time for regular AA batteries (2x) in the new sound box should be around 300 hours.
This should result in approximately 3 weeks of battery lifetime, based on for example:
- 12 hour night time usage and 1x 2 hour day nap
- 10 hour night time usage (giving that they turn the sound unit off after these 10 hours) and 2x 2 hour day naps

The dolls come with regular batteries and should last for the same time as any other regular batteries.

Does Lulla affect motion sensor pads?

Lulla emits sounds of a heart beating which generates small movements. These can be detected by motion sensor pads if they are set to the highest sensitivity and if the doll is placed directly on the sensor pad. However, the Lulla doll has velcro straps, found in the back pocket and can be attached to the crib or be placed outside the crib. Lulla won't then affect the sesor pads from this distance and complies with pediatric guidelines, recommend to parents, to not have anything loose in the baby's sleep environment before the age of 12 months.
